Andrelton Simmons Cubs deal

Free-agent shortstop Andrelton Simmons has agreed to a one-year deal with the Cubs worth $4 million plus incentives, MLB Network insider Jon Heyman reported on Friday. The Cubs have not confirmed the report, which would be pending a physical.

The 32-year-old Simmons carries a well-earned reputation as one of the slickest-fielding shortstops in baseball history. He’s a four-time Gold Glove Award winner (including the 2013 NL Platinum Glove) and ranks 13th all-time in Baseball-Reference’s Defensive WAR metric, as well as sixth among shortstops in Total Zone Runs, a metric that goes back to 1954. He trails only Ozzie Smith, Mark Belanger, Cal Ripken Jr., Luis Aparicio and Omar Vizquel in the latter metric.

Defensive Runs Saved extends back to 2003, and in that span of 19 seasons, Simmons’ total of plus-196 DRS ranks a close second to Adrián Beltré (plus-200) among all fielders. In six years’ worth of Statcast’s Outs Above Average (OAA), Simmons’ plus-81 ranks third…
