Max Scherzer blue Mets jersey swap treated 2021
As a member of the Washington Nationals, Max Scherzer made six Opening Day starts, including each of the last four seasons.
But if there’s a question as to whether he or Jacob deGrom should get the ball for the Mets on their March 7 Opening Day against the Nats, the veteran seemed to make it clear on Friday that he’ll defer to deGrom whenever he has to.
According to Bob Klapisch of the Newark Star-Ledger, Scherzer told Mets coaches on Friday in Port St. Lucie that “I’m here to help Jake. He should get the ball whenever he wants. He comes before me.”
DeGrom has made three straight Opening Day starts for the Mets, with the Mets going 2-1 in those games.
No matter what the exact order is, the Mets unquestionably have the best one-two rotation punch of any team in the league. With five Cy Young Awards, 12 All-Star nods, and 4,525 strikeouts between them, Scherzer and deGrom should make for a tremendous pairing in Queens.
