The Yankees announced Thursday that they signed Anthony Rizzo on a two-year contract through the 2023 season, with a player opt-out clause following 2022. Rizzo, who reportedly agreed to a deal worth $32 million Tuesday, arrived Thursday at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla., and delved into his free agency.
“It’s a slow offseason for everyone, obviously, with the lockout,” he said. “Then, when it ended, everyone was predicting this kind of frenzy like you’ve seen in the NBA, which we kind of knew it was going to be — somewhat slow. One day goes by, I guess that’s slow. … But there was constant communication throughout the offseason with a lot of teams, the Yankees being at the forefront of it.
