Jim Leyland managed Max Scherzer. He managed against Buck Showalter. He also presided over 22 big-league seasons from the dugout well enough to earn a reputation as one of the best managers in baseball, so when he predicts the two most prominent additions to the Mets will add up to a rousing success in Queens, it seems rather significant.
On Showalter: “He was the perfect choice for the Mets.”
On Scherzer: “When guys see how he competes… they’ve seen it from the other side, but when they see his preparation and everything, it’s going to pump them up. His impact will be huge.”
