2-Run Frames Power Gold to Series-Opening Win

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Gold Team scored twice in each of the first four innings to cruise to an 8-4 victory in the five-inning series opener of Purdue baseball’s Black & Gold Series on Thursday at Alexander Field.

Gold played a clean game defensively and got zeros from Khal Stephen and Kyle Iwinski (to open and close the game) on a day in which there were only three scoreless frames total.

Luke Gaffney, Cam Thompson and Evan Albrecht all connected for a double as part of a two-run inning for Gold. Gaffney barreled up for an opposite-field blast off the wall in right center for an RBI double. Albrecht llined an RBI double into left field in the fourth inning.

Paul Toetz blasted off for a long home run to left field with two outs in the third inning for the Black Team. Jake Parr and Lukas Cook delivered doubles for Black, including an RBI double for Cook in the fourth inning.

Jake Jarvis opened the scoring with a two-run single back through the middle in the first inning as the Gold Team capitalized on an error on a sac bunt and a botched rundown with runners on the corners. Jarvis was not retired in his three plate appearances, getting hit by a pitch twice.

CJ Valdez singled in each of his first two at-bats for Black. Brody Chrisman singled twice for Gold while also recording an RBI and scoring a run. Fellow freshman AJ Rinebold worked a scoreless inning for Black in the top of the fifth.

Game 2 of the series is set for Friday at 4:30 p.m. and scheduled to be six innings.
