WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Gold Team continued to score early and often over the final two games of the three-game intrasquad to complete a sweep of Purdue baseball’s Black & Gold Series, which marked the conclusion of fall ball practice Saturday at Alexander Field.

The Gold Team won 8-3 Friday in six innings and 16-6 Saturday in five innings.

In a series that featured a combined 45 runs over just 16 innings of action, CJ Backer’s 9-up, 9-down performance as the Gold Team starting pitcher may have been the most impressive. The junior was perfect in his three innings as the only pitcher to work at least a full inning that went unscored upon in the series.

Cam Thompson, Steve Ramirez and Paul Toetz all homered in Saturday’s slugfest. Thompson hit for the cycle over the course of the series for Gold, finishing the accomplishment with an RBI triple in his final at-bat.

Toetz homered twice in the series and also connected for an RBI triple for the Black Team, posting an impressive 1.375 slugging percentage in his nine plate appearances. Connor Caskenette also had three extra-base hits for the victorious Gold, including a two-run homer Friday.

Mike Bolton Jr. and Jake Jarvis were on-base machines for Gold. The outfielders reached base safely a combined 13 times in 19 plate appearances.

Freshmen Brody Chrisman and Luke Gaffney were productive at the bottom of the order for Gold, finishing the series a combined 9-for-16 with five RBI and six runs scored.

The Gold Team scored seven times in the second inning Saturday to blow it open early, supporting a solid outing from Griffin Lohman. The junior struck out four over 2 2/3 innings of one-run ball.

The Boilermakers are set to host the annual Halloween Bash costume scrimmage and trick-or-treat Thursday at 6 p.m. ET. It’s a free public event open to all ages. Purdue opens its 2023 series the weekend of Feb. 17 to 19 with a four-game series vs. Holy Cross in Sugar Land, Texas.
