Arkansas left-hander Hagen Smith named preseason All-American

To outsiders, a look at the Arkansas baseball team returning just two starters from the lineup would be a cause for concern.

Ah, but that pitching.

The Diamond Hogs are again considered a top-15 team in the nation for 2023 and lots of that praise is because of what they have on the hill.

In fact, left-hander Hagen Smith was named preseason All-American on Thursday by Perfect Game.

The sophomore had a 4.66 earned-run average in 77.1 innings last year as he struck out 90 batters and held opponents to a .232 batting average. The numbers were enough to give him third-team honors by PG.

Smith moved to the bullpen for part of the NCAA Tournament and he absolutely shined in the postseason. He pitched in five games, only two of which were starts,  and had a 3.38 ERA in 10 2/3 innings. His five innings with eight strikeouts against Ole Miss in the College World Series elimination game was full-fledged arrival, so to speak.

Arkansas begins its 2023 pursuit of a national title February 17 against Texas in the College Baseball Showdown. The Diamond Hogs will play the Longhorns, TCU and Oklahoma State at Globe Life Field before their home opener February 21 against Grambling.
